Sergeant Wood’s Military History
For as long as he can remember, Sergeant Brian Wood wanted to be in the military. His mind was made up after the 9/11 attacks when he was only a junior in high school. He enlisted in the US Army after graduating in 2003. His career lasted 10 years, in which he served multiple combat tours overseas in Afghanistan. Brian was attached to the 1st and 25th Infantry Divisions during his career. His highest achievements include receiving the Bronze Star on two separate occasions!
His first Bronze Star was awarded meritoriously during his first tour in Afghanistan. He was stationed in a very remote base near the Iranian boarder with a 16 man embedded training team that involved the US Special Forces. There he lived with the Afghan National Army and trained them while simultaneously conducting combat missions. Brian was involved in multiple fire fights . He was published in the Stars and Stripes military newspaper in May, 2009 for an 18 hour long fire fight where he lead his 16 man team in a fight with over 350 Taliban fighters!
Sergeant Wood’s second Bronze star was awarded for valor and bravery during combat in his last tour in Afghanistan. Brian was stationed in a remote mountainous base near the Pakistan boarder. He was attached to an infantry platoon and was a Squad Leader that commanded 10 soldiers. During this tour, his squad occupied a mountain top observation post on rotation for a 2 week period. While Brian’s squad was at this OP, they were ambushed by a force of 60 Taliban! Sergeant Wood commanded his squad against the insurgents for over 10 hours! Seven hours into the fight, his squad ran out of ammunition. The only thing keeping the enemy at bay was Brian—who directed artillery fire and air support via helicopters with only his radio. His entire squad was awarded valorous achievements for their unshaken bravery!
Sergeant Wood sustained injuries that inhibit him from deploying again, however he is still actively serving locally in the Army National Guard. We are so thankful for all of his sacrifices. We are blessed to live in such a free country!
